The Climb Against the Odds 2012 expedition is off to an inspiring start!
Yesterday evening, the amazing 2012 Climb Against the Odds team gathered together for a welcome ceremony with supporters and staff to honor our tradition of climbing mountains for breast cancer prevention by making space to remember why we are here on this journey together.
We joined hands to encircle a pot of soil, then one by one we entered the circle to plant a seed while sharing our reasons for being here—the climbers spoke of why they are climbing and for whom. The experiences that brought us all to Mt. Shasta and to the Breast Cancer Fund are heart-breaking, uplifting, inspiring and hopeful beyond words. Breast cancer survivors and their children shared hope for the future, loved ones currently facing cancer were honored and those we have lost were remembered. As each name was spoken and each intention was shared, the room overflowed with emotion as we held each other up on this step of our journey together. Most come to this circle and to this climb not knowing each other, but by evening’s end, we were bound together by the shared experiences of our past and the adventure yet to come. We are a community and team that knows, together, we can stop breast cancer before it starts, one step at a time.

Best of luck to the climb team this year! I wish I were there, and remember my climb in 2011 as the adventure of a lifetime!
