The New York Times health blog discusses whether or not nail polish poses a serious health risk.
Following pressure from our Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and other public health advocates in 2006, many companies claimed to have voluntarily removed three particularly harmful chemicals known as the"toxic trio" from their products, but a 2012 investigation revealed that many of the companies simply changed their labels while continuing to use them.
Our director of program and policy, Janet Nudelman, is quoted in the article, explaining how certain groups of people, such as nail salon workers and children, may be at higher risk of the health consequences from exposure to the chemicals in polish. Nudelman advises nail polish enthusiasts to do research to find the safest brands.
